Since early January, state legislators in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota have been debating and working through lots of measures dealing with taxes, education and social issues.

In February, we took a look at where bills and key issues stood in the Iowa Legislature after one month, and we will have a two-months catchup in Iowa later in March.

Today, we are checking in on where things stand in the state legislatures in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Giving the lay of the land in Nebraska and South Dakota are seasoned reporters who cover the legislatures. The guests are Lee Strubinger, of South Dakota Public Broadcasting, and Fred Knapp, of Nebraska Public Media.

Knapp and Strubinger flesh out what has happened and what may lie ahead with property taxes, eminent domain usage for carbon pipeline projects, mobile phone use by K-12 students, Educational Savings Accounts for students in private schools, medical marijuana, and much more.

They also describe the challenges in passing a budget in a lean revenues year, while Strubinger gives an overview of the workings by new South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden, a longtime state legislator who succeeded fellow Republican Kristi Noem just six weeks ago.
