This What's Frequency episode is devoted to two big events that will advance the process of selecting a president of the United States in November.
Both the Democratic and Republican parties will hold national conventions, in which thousands of delegates from all 50 states and some territories will nominate their picks for president and vice president.
For Republicans, the convention in Milwaukee next week is expected to draw about 50,000 people. They are meeting about one month before Democrats, who will hold their national convention in Chicago from August 19 to 22.
For many weeks, it has seemed a foregone conclusion that the major party competitors for the 2024 presidency will be Republican former President Donald Trump and Democratic current president Joe Biden.
At the time of the recording of this episode, there is some drama on whether Democrats will stay with Biden. Political observers and some Democrats have said Biden should step aside following his low-energy performance in the first presidential debate on June 27.
There are many Siouxlanders who have the honor of being delegates to national conventions, where they will hear speeches, set the platform of key issues, take part in turnout-the-vote sessions and finally cast their preference for the party nominees.
That list includes Republicans Shontelle Blair, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Jeff Taylor, of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Lynn Evans, of Aurelia, Iowa, and also Democrats Leslie Gerrish, of Vermillion, South Dakota, Frank Kloucek, of Yankton, South Dakota, and Kim Weaver, of Northwest Iowa.
OnFrequency episode, we will hear from two guests who are delegates to those conventions. Those people are Democrat Catelin Drey, of Sioux City, and Republican Teresa Paulsud, of Danbury, in Ida County, who we will start with first.
They share when they got politically active, what issues are most important to them, and their views on the close presidential race.
Drey and Paulsrud also share what they will do at the national conventions and what they think they will most enjoy doing.
