U.S. Senate candidates Democrat Josh Turek and Republican Ashley Hinson faced off on the war in Iran in their first debate on Wednesday.
The candidates took questions on affordability, healthcare, immigration, tariffs and Social Security.
Hinson, a congresswoman from northeastern Iowa, recently called for an immediate and successful end to the war in Iran.
She said she would also not support a resolution to limit President Trump’s powers in Iran to further military action.
"I certainly don't want to see the president not be able to do a orderly end to this war. You look at what happened when President Biden did the withdrawal hastily out of Afghanistan, and we lost 13 service members, including an Iowan at Abbey Gate," Hinson said.
Turek, a state representative from Council Bluffs, says he’s concerned about Iran having a nuclear weapon, but would like to see the war end.
Turek said he broke with his own party in 2024 to support a bill that would allow state courts to deport undocumented immigrants who have re-entered the country illegally.
Hinson said she did not support the federal legislation because it would have let too many undocumented immigrants cross the southern border.
The hour-long debate aired on Iowa PBS.
