The Warming Shelter in Sioux City was among five organizations to receive the first round of grants that came from a settlement that Iowa received from a large opioid lawsuit.
The award of $304,000 was announced on Thursday by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird.
The Warming Shelter provides specialized services for homeless residents with substance use issues.
A total of $1.6 million went to those five groups, with The Warming Shelter being the sole one in Northwest Iowa.
Bird said additional rounds of such grants will aid Iowa groups who seek to address opioid addiction.Twenty-five percent of Iowa’s opioid settlement money will go to such organizations.
Bird said, “We want to work with every corner of the state. If you have a program that is fighting against the ravages of drug addiction in your community, please apply for one of these grants.”
