As a new school year begins for area colleges, Western Iowa Tech Community College is marking 60 years of educating people and serving the wider community.
Western Iowa Tech was founded in 1966 in Sioux City, and over subsequent years opened other sites in Cherokee, Denison, Mapleton and Le Mars.
A new post on the college website says, “What began with a vision to provide accessible career and technical education has grown into a comprehensive community college serving students, businesses, and communities across western Iowa and beyond.
A series of 60th anniversary events will be held over the year ahead. Some of those include a Lifelong Learning program celebration on September 13 and an October 6 fall festival with lots of family events.
There has been a change in the presidential position in this notable, as Terry Lindsay succeeded Terry Murrell, who retired after 14 years.
In a numerical summary, Western Iowa Tech has served more than 31,000 students, awarded nearly 50,000 credentials, and offered hundreds of degrees, diplomas, and certificates representing 184 unique educational and career pathways.
