The Spirit Lake School Board members in a special noon Monday meeting passed a resolution ordering an election to determine if voters want to pass a plan to issue $70 million in bonds to do a wide school facilities modernization.
That was the board’s third meeting in two weeks towards airing details on how school buildings could be made more functional.
The Monday meeting included review of a petition, with more than the 150 signatures needed, by people wanting the bond issue vote to be scheduled.
That measure is being passed onto the Dickinson County Auditor by Wednesday, so that it can be placed on the ballot for the November 3 election.
School officials want to pursue renovating current buildings, or adding new additions, at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
They have asserted that the current condition of the buildings is not sufficient for modern learning, or to keep them operating in a functional manner. A projected cost of $28 million has been shared for work on the elementary building, and $24 million on the high school.
