There could be substantial changes coming to the facilities in the Spirit Lake Iowa School District.
The Spirit Lake School Board in a Monday meeting discussed the possibility of building projects that could cost tens of millions of dollars. It is possible a school bond issue vote could be placed on the upcoming November election.
According to Explore Okoboji, the meeting included discussions of renovating current buildings, or adding new additions. Those include facilities at the elementary, middle and high school levels, plus also an indoor athletics facility.
Elementary Principal Jessica Vancura said much of the elementary building is no longer adequate for current educational standards. A projected cost of $28 million was shared for work on that building.
High School Principal Casey O’Rourke said school officials should not be afraid to dream big to have great facilities for upcoming decades. The high school work could cost $24 million.
The school board also reviewed a proposal for a large athletic field house or “bubble” at a cost of $13 million, to house several sports.
These issues will be discussed next week again at a special Spirit Lake School Board meeting on August 19.
School officials have been looking at facility needs for three years.
