The city of Larchwood is working on creating a new community center, and a state grant will help pay about one-fourth of the cost.

Larchwood on Friday was awarded a $1 million Community Attraction and Tourism, or CAT, Grant.

The community center is projected to cost $4 million, and will be nearly 19,000 square feet. The facility will house a multiuse gymnasium, a walking track, fitness and aerobics rooms, a kitchen and a community room.

Larchwood is a town of about 930 people in Lyon County. The state of Iowa announced eight such CAT grants on Friday.
