The Siouxland Foster Closet, along with Lutheran Services Iowa, is holding a back-to-school event on Monday.
Siouxland Foster Closet is a nonprofit organization that provides clothes and necessities for children in foster care.
Rochelle Pfeifer, founder of SFC, told Siouxland Public Media during the event children will receive a backpack with school supplies, be given a meal, and have an opportunity to shop for clothes.
“The main goal of the nonprofit is that kids feel seen, loved, and worthy,” she said.
While their main focus is clothes, the foster closet has baby supplies, toys, and books. In addition to clothes, they also have toiletries, backpacks, and blankets for older kids.
Most of the organization's supplies come from donations, which have to be in good condition.
She said she sees the need for the organization in Woodbury County as foster families and children continue to get necessities there.
Pfierfer added some foster parents have told her they continue to foster because they know they have the foster closet as a resource they can access in a timely manner and not worry about the cost.
Foster parents, caseworkers, and court-appointed special advocates need referrals and verification to shop at the foster closets.
