Nearly three years after community approval, the new Osceola County jail in Sibley is nearing completion.
In November 2023, Osceola County voters approved a $5 million bond to replace the former jail that’s over 100 years old.
Kevin Wollmuth, Sheriff of Osceola County, said the new jail was long overdue and will be safer for inmates and staff, as first reported by Explore Okoboji. Previously, Wollmuth noted the old facility failed inspections on multiple occasions.
Wollmuth said the new facility has one floor, where all services will be located, contains new software programs, and is more efficient.
He said once the jail is completed, work on the former building and administrative offices will begin. According to Wollmuth, the space occupied by the former jail will turn into a parking lot for the courthouse.
He said construction is expected to be completed in late August or early September.
