Cities and towns in Siouxland are adding safety education to the ongoing conversation of ordinances being placed on e-bikes and scooters.
During the Estherville City Council meeting on Monday, Police Chief Brent Shatto said the electric transportation enforcement challenges in part involve a parenting issue.
As reported by Explore Okoboji, Shatto said some parents are failing to educate their children on traffic rules and safety. He mentioned there have been incidents where children on the electric mobility devices are riding fast, going through stop signs, or riding down sidewalks in the business district.
Council member David Hovinga said the situation could improve once parents educate their children on traffic safety and regulations.
Use of such technology by young riders has exploded in Siouxland this year.
Additionally, the Storm Lake City Council had a similar conversation about education on traffic safety for the electric modes of transportation, as reported by KCAU.
Meg McKeon, Mayor of Storm Lake, said there is a need for more education on e-bike and e-scooter safety.
Mckeon said placing a regulation on the electric vehicles ensures residents are paying attention to rules in place.
She added once an ordinance is in place, the city will focus on the education aspect, saying adults and children need to have a conversation on basic safety.
