Communities across the United States are participating in a national protest against data centers on Saturday, including residents in Salix.

Since April, there have been conversations about a possible data center being built in Salix.

Janet Yanak, a Salix resident, told Siouxland Public Media on Thursday community members will be gathering to rally against data centers.

Yanak said they will use the moment to remind people about the moratorium the Salix city council had discussed in its previous meeting.

In the last city council meeting, residents requested a moratorium on large-scale data centers being placed on city land. The city council agreed to consider a one-year ordinance to pause projects related to data centers.

“We want to make sure that everyone knows that we definitely want that moratorium in place,” she said.

The rally is important to Yanak because she’s trying to keep a data center from being built in her front yard.

Yanak encouraged people to join but reminded people that the rally will be peaceful, where disruptive behavior is not allowed.

Data centers have been popping up across the nation, raising concerns about water quality, utility costs, and impacts on health.

The rally will take place on July 18th at 10:30 am in front of the Salix City Hall.
