The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday that drought conditions in Northwest Iowa are expected to last into September.
According to the IDNR release, northwest Iowa experienced an unseasonably dry June and is under an active drought watch.
IDNR stated Iowa’s June precipitation levels averaged 5.22 inches, which is 0.4 below normal, but some areas, such as Cherokee, were 0.92 below average.
The release says that June 2026 ties with multiple years as the 64th warmest and ranks as the 96th driest June in 154 years of statewide records.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center outlook predicts drought conditions in the far northwest region of the state will continue into September.
