The Woodbury County Democrats held a special nomination convention on Wednesday evening to select their candidates for the Board of Supervisors seats.
A special nominating convention is a process used by political parties to place candidates on an election ballot when a vacancy occurs or if a seat lacks representation following a filing period.
The two candidates that were selected in the convention were Jody House for District 2 and Brittney Wilson for District 4.
Each nominee had three minutes to speak on why they are running and their priorities.
Brittney Wilson, a working mother, was the sole nominee for District 4. During her speech, Wilson said elected officials should be held accountable, transparent, and responsive to the people they serve.
Her priorities include supporting public safety by strengthening human services, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and making sure the county government stays connected with residents’ living experience in the county.
Currently, supervisor Matthew Ung holds the seat for District 4. In January, Ung announced he was not seeking reelection. Presently, there is not a Republican candidate running for the position.
Additionally, there were a total of three candidates seeking the nomination for District 2. Jody House won the majority vote with 8 out of 14.
House couldn't make it to the convention due to health reasons. However, her nomination video was played for the audience.
House said she values accountability, transparency, and communication. House’s priorities include strengthening financial planning, improving communication between the board and residents, and ensuring policies are applied consistently.
The other nominees for District 2 were Michael Bayala, a businessman, and Maria Rundquist, a business owner.
The District 2 seat is currently held by incumbent Dan Bittinger. Bittinger, a Republican, was first elected in November 2022.
UPDATE: The Republican Party of Woodbury County will hold a convention to nominate a person for the county board District 4 position. That will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27.
