The Sioux City Council heard an update on the hiring process for the police chief position in its meeting Monday.
In April, police chief Rex Mueller announced his retirement. Mueller has been with the Sioux City Police Department since 1996 and served as police chief since 2017.
During the meeting, Janelle Bertrand, director of human resources for the city, said the city had received 19 applications for the position, coming from different states. Three of the applicants are from Iowa.
Bertrand noted the application was open to external and internal candidates. Another way for a person to become police chief is through a promotion.
She mentioned the process is broken down into three parts: written exam, presentation, and oral examination.
The applicants will be reviewed by the Civil Service Commission, which is made of people from different city departments, including human resources. Candidates must pass each phase to be considered.
The examination process is expected to take place the week of July 13. The Civic Service Commission is expected to identify certified and eligible candidates by the week of July 20.
