The South Dakota Board of Education Standards approved three videos focused on prenatal development during its meeting Monday.
During the 2026 legislative session, the state passed a law requiring schools to show students age-appropriate and researched-based videos on prenatal human growth and development. However, the law did not identify which age group should be watching the videos.
The videos are required to show organ growth throughout the stages of development and an animation demonstrating prenatal development from fertilization to birth.
Additionally, the videos are banned from using information from groups that carry out or promote abortions.
The board approved the videos in a 7 to 0 vote.
