The Sioux City School Board will discuss the discontinuation of specialty statuses for Nodland and Sunnyside Elementary during its meeting Monday.
According to a memo, the district previously had six specialty elementary schools that had lessons and plans that focused on different areas, such as science, technology, engineering, and math.
The memo also says during the last five years, the specialty programs have been difficult to carry out due to lacking individualized staff and the inability to obtain proper funding.
The school district sent out surveys to staff and parents. After the surveys and further discussion the Nodland-Sunnyside staff are asking the board to acknowledge the discontinuation of their specialty status at the end of the fiscal year.
Additionally, the memo says that the schools will redirect and increase focus on reading and math. Therefore, staff will have training and development focused on the two subjects.
