Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced Thursday he has requested President Donald Trump issue a major disaster declaration for severe storms that impacted the state in May.

According to the release, the storms resulted in tornadoes, extreme winds, and flash flooding, which caused severe damages to the public infrastructure.

Funding from the request would cover some damages for multiple counties, including Thurston County.

The release says the damages include downed power lines and extensive damage to schools, buildings, and roadways, with an estimated cost of about $5 million in damages.

In addition to the disaster proclamation, Pillen requested access to the Hazard Mitigation Grant program, which provides funding to governments to let them rebuild in ways that reduce or mitigate future disaster losses.

Thursday’s request is the second federal disaster declaration made in two months. The first one was in May for the wildfires.
