The Sioux City Council will consider authorizing the Sioux City Police Department to accept a Byrne-Justice Assistance Grant in its meeting Monday.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Byrne Justice Assistance Grants are used by state and local agencies in Iowa to improve the criminal justice system.

It says the program focuses on breaking the cycle of substance abuse and crime by holding people accountable and enhancing law enforcement programs.

The federal grant would provide $77,250 to expand the flock safety License Plate Reader Camera system from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.

According to a city memo, Flock software and hardware provide notifications to the police department. It says the flock program can capture videos, audio, and images of vehicle descriptions and license plates.

The police department applied for the grant in February.
