The National Park Service is looking for volunteers in South Dakota to help clean up the Missouri River in Yankton on Saturday.
Park rangers will guide volunteers down the river to collect litter while providing information about the Missouri and its wildlife.
According to NPS, certain chemical and physical properties of the Missouri River have been studied since before the closure of the mainstem dams. It also says the inflows from the James and Vermillion rivers have occasional high levels of fecal bacteria.
However, it has not restricted the river’s use for water-based activities, nor is it expected to.
The Paddle with a Purpose clean-up effort will begin at Gavins Point Dam at 8 am and end at Riverside Park (Yankton, South Dakota) at 12 pm.
