Tuesday will be an important day in the process of electing people to county, state and federal positions in the November general election.

Polls in the primary election that picks nominees for the fall election will be open in Iowa from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and in South Dakota from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In essence, the primary reduces a field of candidates to the one nominee for each political party.

Voters will have to register as either a Democrat or Republican to participate in one party’s primary. Iowans can register to vote or change their party affiliation at their polling place.

The candidates are moving all over the states of Iowa and South Dakota in the attempt to persuade voters.

Both states have had early absentee voting underway for about three weeks. Iowans who have not mailed in their early ballots should take them to county auditor offices, as the postal service may not get them in time to county offices by the end of the business day.

Additionally, they can surrender their absentee ballot at their polling place and vote a regular ballot.

The primary election was previously held in Nebraska in May.
