Mason City officially opened a destination bike park Friday, towards the goal of establishing the northern Iowa town as a regional outdoor recreation capital.

The new Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park includes pump tracks, progressive jump features and other technical elements designed for bikers to build skills at every level. There are many miles of single-track trails too.

The first annual Prairie Rock Trails Bike Fest runs over three days to show people the new destination bike park.

A similar bike park opened in Cone Park in Sioux City in 2024.

Lindsey James is the executive director of Visit Mason City. She says the community’s investment in outdoor recreation builds on its reputation as a tourist destination.

“We’re known for our arts and culture, our phenomenal architecture, our musical heritage, but outdoor recreation is something that makes Mason City very unique, as well,” James said.

The International Mountain Bicycling Association designated Mason City as a 2026 Trail Town in March.
