There are about 60 more trees in downtown Sioux City, after a new project to restore trees in places that used to have them.

Downtown Partners official Ragen Cote was enthused about adding the trees Friday afternoon.

The Sioux City Parks and Recreation department provided the staff and equipment to plant the trees on a balmy late spring day.

Cote said Downtown Partners in 2024 surveyed 87 areas where trees were either damaged or missing from the downtown landscape.

Of those, 26 spots were not able to host a new tree due to utilities in the vicinity, so those were paved over. For those that could still hold trees, the space for planting was doubled.

The project was funded by the Kind World Foundation, Downtown Partners, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

In an associated project, private properties along Virginia Street are also participating by adding trees on the State Steel and F&M Bank lots.
