Some tornadoes moved through Siouxland on Sunday evening and the forecast shows more could return on Monday evening.
At the same time, officials in South Sioux City are working towards building a storm safe room in a prominent city park.
Last week, the South Sioux City Council received bids from four firms interested in that project.
The bids ranged from $950,000 to $1.1 million for the facility that will be built at Scenic Park. City staff recommended the contract go to the lowest bidder, which was $950,000 from H&R Construction, which was carried out by the council.
The city got funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The safe room will be near a shelterhouse in the busy Scenic Park campground, for use during severe weather.
The project should be completed within a year.
*Additionally, the Dickinson County Nature Center is getting some state money for a special project.
The Iowa Economic Development Authority has awarded a $387,000 Community Attraction and Tourism Grant to the Nature Playscape project at the county site..
That specialty outdoor playscape includes elements for sensory exploration and will incorporate native plantings.
The total cost of the project is $1.9 million. The playscape construction will begin once fundraising is completed, which could run into 2027.
