Huge field of candidates for Nebraska governor will be whittled by Tuesday primary vote

Ways To Subscribe

There are 10 candidates seeking the Nebraska governor position in 2026, but after the Tuesday primary election, that number will drop to three.

Incumbent governor Jim Pillen is being opposed by fellow Republicans Sal Holguin, of Omaha, Sheila Korth-Focken, of Long Pine, Gary Rogge, of Auburn, Jacy Todd, of York, and John Walz, of Hastings.

Pillen was elected governor in 2022.

Two Democrats are running, with state senator Lynne Walz and Larry Marvin, who has unsuccessfully run for the U.S. Senate three times.

For the Legal Marijuana NOW political party, the candidates are Rick Beard and James Charvat III.

The leading votegetters for each political party in the primary become the nominees for the November 2 ballot.

Early voting for the primary has been ongoing for weeks, and polls on Tuesday will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Republican Party dominates in voter registration in Nebraska.
