Multiple Siouxland organizations and agencies held events and marched on Tuesday in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Awareness Day.
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Indian Affairs, American Indian and Alaska Native people are at a disproportionate risk of experiencing violence, murder, or going missing and make up a significant portion of the missing and murdered cases.
According to the SD missing persons clearinghouse, there are 73 open missing Indigenous people cases, with a few people missing since 1974. One person has been missing since May 2, 2026.
The Nebraska State Patrol says there are 22 missing Indigenous people, with one person missing since 1986.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, there are 4 Indigenous people reported missing, with one person missing since 1986.
Some well-known cases in the Siouxland area are Terri McCauley, Lori Ann Decora, and Marlon White Eyes.
