South Dakota’s Department of Social Services continues navigating the effects of federal changes to Medicaid and SNAP benefits.
The modifications come from the passage of the H.R.1 bill.
Two of the changes could require states to fund a portion of SNAP benefits and create community engagement regulations for Medicaid expansion recipients.
Tiffany Wolfgang, chief of Children and Family Services for DSS, said she’s optimistic the changes won’t impact the state; however, she remains cautious.
If South Dakota exceeds an error payment rate of 6 percent, it would have to cover over $30 million in program benefits, based on 2024’s rate.
Additionally, changes to Medicaid expansion would require recipients to complete about 80 hours per month community service, part-time education, or a work program to apply for or renew coverage.
Wolfgang mentioned the DSS team is working to inform beneficiaries and ensure resources are available to determine eligibility correctly.
The changes begin January 1, 2027.
