With Helen Rigdon ending nearly nine years as director of the Sioux City Public Library, a successor for that position could be announced in a few weeks.

Rigdon on Tuesday posted a retirement message, describing being grateful to have led the library system, for the many users who value the variety of options in public libraries.

She wrote, “My deepest appreciation goes to the incredible staff of the Sioux City Public Library. Many have been with me since my first day, and their dedication to both the Library and the community is truly unparalleled.”

Library Board member Jim Wharton on Wednesday told Siouxland Public Media News that a new director will likely be chosen by mid-to-late May, for the person to start in mid-June.

Rigdon also thanked the Library Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Sioux City Public Library group and the Sioux City Public Library Foundation for their ongoing commitment.

In related news, Thursday will be the first day for the 2026 Book Lovers Book Sale, at the Southern Hills Mall.
