Officials in Salix, Iowa, are taking steps to annex about 950 acres of land on the town's north edge.

The specific reason for what may be done with the land, if fully annexed, is not certain, but Mayor Kevin Nelson said MidAmerican Energy is investigating some options.

After the Salix City Council meeting on Wednesday, Siouxland Public Media News asked Nelson if there was a specific project for the land.

“From my understanding in talking to the MidAmerican folks, they are doing site analysis there and they have options on some of that land that’s being annexed…No final decisions have been made one way or another,” he said.

Nelson said about six property owners “wanted their land annexed into Salix,” and the voluntary annexation option is being pursued.

About twenty people attended the meeting to hear about the annexation, with only two asking questions about the action. After the council unanimously approved the annexation, the majority of the people at the meeting left.

Annexation is where a city expands its boundaries to include adjacent unincorporated plots of land. Salix has a population of about 400 people in southern Woodbury County.

Nelson said the city would benefit from the annexation because instead of the county getting the property taxes, the city would receive that revenue.

Now that the city council approved the annexation all documents regarding it will be sent to the secretary of state, Woodbury county board of supervisors, and MidAmerican Energy.
