The North Sioux City Commission discussed multiple topics related to flood recovery in its meeting Tuesday.
During the meeting, the commission awarded a contract to Lieber Construction for the McCook Lake grading project. The McCook Lake grading project’s first phase will remove debris, restore the riverfront, and cultivate areas along Northshore Drive.
According to a memo, seven bids were received for the project on April 1st, with all bidders under the estimated cost.
Lieber Construction of North Sioux City had the lowest bid at $94,131, and the North Ridge Excavating of Homer had the highest bid of $$162,378.
Previously, the project was estimated to cost $175,000. According to a memo, the engineering firm attributed the difference in price to fluctuating material costs and a competitive bid environment.
Additionally, a resident asked the commission what is being done to prevent flooding damage from happening in the future.
Mayor Chris Bogenrief, said the city is working with the US Army Corps of Engineers on a general investigative study that will lead to flood mitigation solutions.
Bogenrief added the study is currently being conducted. However, it will take ten years until it’s complete.
Furthermore, the commission approved a bid for garages as part of the McCook Lake regrading project, approved a new cooperation agreement for flood and erosion control, and received an update on the army corps study.
The cooperation agreement places the city on notice stating the levy has not been properly maintained, and it’s the city’s responsibility to manage it. The agreement includes North Sioux City, Union County, and the Army Corps.
