Two special elections in the month of April will get the Spencer (Iowa) City Council back to full strength.

There will be a special election on April 7 for the Spencer Council Ward 4 seat, then another on April 28n for the Ward 5 position. Clay County Elections Deputy Brandy Van Otterloo said the sole polling place will be in the county administration building, with voting from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The council position for Ward 4 opened when Donavan Wunschel was elected mayor of Spencer in November. However, after council members originally appointed Duane Bates, people by petition contested that move, forcing the special election

The two candidates for the Ward 4 position are Bates and James Vermeer.

For the Ward 5 position on April 28, the only candidate is Julie Beehler.
