South Sioux City Community School District

Student enrollment at the South Sioux City school district continues to grow even more since St. Michael’s Catholic School announced its closing. In December St. Michael's announced the school will close at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.

Lance Swanson, director of communications and community engagement, told Siouxland Public Media on Wednesday the district has enrolled about 45 students from St. Michael’s for the 2026-2027 school year.

Swanson added the school district continues to exceed enrollment projections and expects it will keep surpassing predicted trends.

He said as the district grows, it’s constantly evaluating its space, staffing, and programming to meet all the students’ needs.

Swanson added they are currently collecting additional feedback from staff, families, and community members on a no-tax-increase levy to guide short- and long-term adjustments.

In May community members rejected a $127 million school bond because it would increase the property tax levy in the district.

He stated those conversations will include enrollment trends, facility needs, and how to best position the district for the future.

Currently, decisions have not been made about a specific bond measure.
