Nebraska lawmakers passed a budget bill on Thursday after two failed attempts to move forward.
Previously, the bill was stalled twice due to a filibuster; the Senate was divided on two proposals in the bill regarding funding for private education.
One proposal requested that the state fund scholarships for students attending private and religious schools. It would replace funding lost from the repeal of private school scholarships.
The other proposal was asking the state to provide funding for subsidies to offset the costs of private education. Each proposal would have cost the state more than $3 million.
In order for the bill to move forward, 33 votes were needed to end the filibuster. However, both times the senate was unable to reach that number.
Amendments were made to the subsidies, and the scholarship proposal was removed.
According to the Nebraska Legislature website, the Senate passed it on a 34-7 vote without opposition.
