Sioux City officials are working towards adding an armored vehicle to the Sioux City Police Department fleet of vehicles.

Last week, a city budget session saw the amount set aside for an armored vehicle increased to $405,000.

Then in the Monday weekly city council meeting, the council approved a purchase order to Lenco Armored Vehicles in Massachusetts for a unit.

The base cost is $278,900, and the price is much more, due to the G2 Pro Package ordered for $87,000, plus other extras. It could take about 18 months to get the armored vehicle.

Mayor Bob Scott repeated that he is not completely sold on the city needing the unit, since the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department also has an armored vehicle.

“There are people in our community who believe we don’t need this,” the mayor said.

Police Chief Rex Mueller last week said that, while the county could loan theirs to the city at times, there could be cases when each agency has to have one for certain situations.
