The significance of Ramadan one of the holiest months for Muslims

Ways To Subscribe

Ramadan is considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. It often consists of prayers, fasting, and acts of charity, though traditions may be different for each country. Islam is the second most widely practiced religion. According to a 2025 study from Pew Research Center, Muslims make up about 24 percent of the world’s population. The study showed the number of Muslims around the world grew 21 percent from 2010 to 2020. Siouxland Public Media spoke with Dr. Eyad Najdawi about how he celebrates Ramadan, what he reflects on during this time, and what it means to him.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a time determined by the lunar cycle, and it lasts for a month.

Dr. Najdawi mentioned that during Ramadan people try to focus on having food that has protein, and soup tends to be a staple since it provides hydration. Another staple for the month, he said, is dates, because they provide a lot of fiber and nutrients.

According to the Educating for Cultural Literacy and Mutual Respect website, at the end of Ramadan, Muslims have a celebration called Eid ul-Fitr. During the morning a special prayer and sermon are held, followed by community festivities.
