South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem at the Sioux Falls city hall building in June 2020. The state's coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are rising, but Noem has said they are in good shape.

After fourteen months in her position, Kristi Noem was removed as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday.

In early 2025 Noem stepped down from her position as governor of South Dakota and took on the role of secretary of the DHS.

President Donald Trump nominated Noem in 2024 for the executive cabinet position and then officially appointed her in January 2025.

Noem is the person to leave Trump’s administration in his second term; however, Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin is expected to assume her position.

The announcement comes after Noem spent two days being criticized by lawmakers in Congress over her leadership.
