A combined $425,000 in grants was given to six Siouxland colleges and nonprofits on Thursday, when annual awards from the Missouri River Historical Development organization were announced.
The MRHD grants ranged from $20,000 to $120,000. The largest amount of $120,000 went to Briar Cliff University, Morningside University, and Western Iowa Tech Community College.
Due to the closure of St. Luke’s College of Nursing, the scholarship program was expanded to include two additional colleges in Dakota County.
Nebraska Indian Community College and Northeast Community College each received $20,000.
In addition, through a new partnership, the Kind World Foundation is matching MRHD scholarship dollars with the combined funds administered through the Siouxland Community Foundation.
The program provides funding to support scholarships up to $5,000 to students who have graduated from a high school in Woodbury County.
The Missouri River Historical Development group holds the license for casino gambling in Woodbury County, and its officials provide such grants as part of their mission.
MRHD gives out three rounds of grants each year, including the largest financial grant of up to $1 million, in the Economic Development Match Grant category.
