A combined $1.25 million dollars in grants were given to nine Siouxland organizations on Thursday, when annual awards from the Missouri River Historical Development organization were announced.
The MRHD grants ranged from $25,000 to $250,000. That largest amount of a quarter-million dollars went to Morningside University for auditorium and gymnasium improvements and also to Heartland Counseling Services in South Sioux City to advance regional mental health and addiction recovery services.
The Boys & Girls Home of Sioux City also received a relatively large amount of $234,375.
Grants of up to $75,000 went to the community club in Danbury, Iowa, the Miracle League of Sioux City for a field surface replacement, the Siouxland Humane Society for a service truck, to Goodwill of the Great Plains, and the Volunteer Firefighter Association in Pierson, Iowa.
The Missouri River Historical Development group holds the license for casino gambling in Woodbury County, and its officials provide such grants as part of their mission.
MRHD gives out three rounds of grants each year, including the largest financial grant of up to $1 million, in the Economic Development Match Grant category.
