Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen on Monday continued to stand by his administration’s decision to award a no-bid contract to agricultural tech CEO Julie Bushell’s company.

During his regular phone-in show with the Nebraska Broadcasters Association, Governor Pillen said the legislature approved the $2.5 million contract when it authorized the spending bill last session.

He argued Global Sustainability Developers, Bushell’s consulting firm, was granted the contract because it had experience securing federal funding for projects.

Pillen said if they didn’t act fast, they would have lost time and been unable to secure over $300 million for the state.

He expressed it was a business decision to help secure more federal funds to support the growing agriculture-related fields, including the bioeconomy industry.
