Northwest Iowa residents will be able to weigh in on how municipal and other entities spend their money, as the arrival of January means the budget-setting season is underway.
Cities, counties, school districts and other taxing entities have until April 30 to finalize property tax levy rates, and budgets in Iowa. People can attend any of those meetings, and some public hearings seeking input will be held as part of those processes.
The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors and Sioux City School Board members have already held budget discussions, and the county supervisors will again on most Tuesdays for the next few months.
The Sioux City School district operates on a $208 million budget, and board members are hoping for increased state spending to schools for next year.
The Sioux City Council has set key budget meetings. The council will discuss the operating budget for city departments on February 28.
Another big meeting, starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, January 17, and lasting about seven hours at City Hall, will review large-dollar projects in the capital budget review session. That will cover such areas as public works, the library, Sioux Gateway Airport and city parks.
