Iowa farmer Wade Dooley has announced he is running to be the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture.

Dooley is a Democrat who operates a farm near Marshalltown that has been in his family for six generations.

Dooley on Tuesday said he is focused on looking for new ways to spur profitable farming operations and to improve land quality, through such initiatives as restoring prairie along the Iowa River.

One other Democrat last week announced a bid for the agriculture position, with Chris Jones, of Iowa City. Jones, a former research engineer at the University, in 2022 published the book The Swine Republic: Struggles With the Truth About Agriculture and Water Quality,

The current Iowa Agriculture Secretary is Mike Naig, a Republican, who has been elected to terms in 2018 and 2022. He is running for re-election, and the contest will be decided by voters in November.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story omitted Jones.
