The Sioux City Council appointed Michael "Tony" Wingert to the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Authority in its meeting Monday.

According to a city memo, the authority was created for the purpose of constructing and operating the new jail.

Wingert will be replacing Ron Wieck, who served on the authority since 2019. Both the City Council and Woodbury County Board of Supervisors must approve of the person being appointed to the LEC Authority. The board of supervisors appointed Wingert to the LEC authority in December.

Wingert is retiring from the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office on January 15th, 2026.

During the meeting, Mark Nelson, chairman of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, said, “I think it’s imperative that we have people on that authority that understand the building, understand how it functions, understands the timetables of replaceable equipment, and who better than someone who has worked in that jail for well over 30 years of a distinguished career?”

Wingert will serve a 6-year term on the authority ending December 31st, 2031.
