A vote to reappoint Ron Wieck to the Law Enforcement Authority board failed in the Sioux City Council meeting Monday.

Mayor Pro Tem Dan Moore said Wieck has been doing an overall good job as chair of the LEC Authority. Moore has been serving on the board representing the council and the city for six years.

He mentioned that a third person, who the Woodbury County board of supervisors and city council approve, has to be appointed to the authority by December 31.

Moore said that it’s important to have Wieck’s institutional experience and that he has been on site a lot.

Council member Alex Watters said he fears the public trust has been eroded.

He questioned if it would be the right decision to reappoint Wieck, mentioning how Todd Wieck was hired by Baker Group after Wieck was appointed. Baker Group is a construction company that had a part in the construction of the new LEC.

Moore mentioned the issues have been discussed, reviewed, and dismissed by attorneys.

There was a vote of 2-2. Council Members Julie Schoenherr and Alex Watters voted no, and Mayor Bob Scott abstained since Wieck is a client.
