Voting is underway in 4 counties Tuesday in Iowa House special election contest

People in four Northwest Iowa counties are voting Tuesday in a special election to decide who will succeed Republican Mike Sexton in the Iowa House.

The Trump Administration appointed longtime lawmaker Sexton as Director for USDA Rural Development in Iowa.

Iowa House District 7 includes Sac, Calhoun, Pocahontas, and part of Webster County. Both candidates on the ballot live in Odebolt in Sac County, and polls are open through 8 p.m.

Democrat Rachel Burns is a speech-language pathologist and volunteer firefighter and EMT. She wants to improve healthcare and education.

Republican Wendy Larson is a stay-at-home mom with a background in corporate sales. She wants to preserve personal liberties, protect property rights, and improve mental healthcare in rural Iowa.

The district has more registered Republicans than Democrats. In an August special election in an Iowa Senate district that had more Republicans, Democrat Catelin Drey of Sioux City won the seat.
