The federal government has released 90 percent of the 2026 Low-Income Energy Assistance Program funding. LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps qualifying low-income homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs.
The recent government shutdown caused delays to the distribution of LIHEAP funds.
According to a press release, Iowa’s LIHEAP team is preparing contract amendments to distribute funds to community action agencies within the next week.
Katie Logan, Development Director of Community Action Agency of Siouxland, said, “We are happy to have heard from the state that funding will begin being distributed soon.”
Logan noted that the agency is scheduling appointments through January and making the online applications available. Payments to client accounts are expected to begin in mid-to-late December and early January.
The Community Action Agency of Siouxland will continue to take applications until April 30th.
