The Sioux City Human Rights Commission has announced the 2025 War Eagle Human Rights Award recipients.

Those selected include two organizations in the Sioux City metro, along with Jessica Lopez-Walker.

Unity in Action and The Urban Native Center were selected for outstanding public service in promoting civil and human rights in Siouxland.

Lopez-Walker is a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, and is dedicated to advocating for Indigenous rights. She has done work for the Human Rights Commission, Women Aware, is president of Siouxland NOW, and co-facilitated the Memorial March.

Unity in Action was founded in 2014 and aims to empower the Latino and immigrant communities through education and support services. Unity in Action is also involved in voting advocacy, giving immigration process services through legal education and English language services.

The Urban Native Center in Sioux City supports Indigenous people through cultural education, youth development and community engagement. That center also hosts cultural gatherings and intertribal events to broaden understanding of Indigenous history and contemporary issues.

A ceremony commemorating Universal Human Rights Day and the War Eagle Human Rights Awards recipients will be held on Wednesday, December 10 at 6 p.m. at the downtown Sioux City Public Museum.
