On a day in which three Sioux City School Board meetings were slated to occur, two took place on Monday, when, in the final meeting, the same two members were picked again to serve as president and vice president.

Jan George was selected to serve as the Sioux City School Board president and Treyla Lee as vice president, with both coming on 4-3 votes of the seven members.

That took place as part of the board organizational meeting, to implement changes as a result of the election three weeks ago. In that voting, George and Bobby Michaelson were re-elected, while Cyndi Hanson also joined the school board, as she racked up the most votes, with 4,551.

Hanson was nominated to serve as both board president and vice president, but she narrowly lost both votes, barely minutes after being sworn in. Hanson said she would have welcomed serving as president as she gained expertise as an elected official.

George said he was proud of his stint as president, adding that at times the board didn't always get along. He also said he was proud of perfect meeting attendance, and vowed to strive always to work on delivering good education to Sioux City School District students.

In the prior board meeting that took place at 6 p.m., the board members heard many financial recaps and said goodbye to Dan Greenwell, who lost his re-election bid by finishing fourth in voting.

Michaelson, George and Lee praised Greenwell for his tenure on the board, particularly for his rapt attention to financial topics.

"Education is a passion of mine," said Greenwell, who teared up as he mentioned his four adult children who were educated in the school district.

The first school board meeting of the day was set for noon, but called off about one hour before that.

It was set as the third meeting over the last 15 days as a special closed meeting, in which the professional evaluation of an employee would be discussed.

In the first of those meetings on November, a leave of absence for Sioux City School District Superintendent Juan Cordova was approved. District officials have said they cannot address
