The Sioux City Council approved a conditional use permit for a retreat center in its meeting Monday.

Owners of neighboring properties expressed their concerns about what the retreat center would mean for their area.

John Fitch, a neighbor to the property, said the notice of public hearing was very vague, and he thought the property was intended to be a bed and breakfast.

Fitch said he didn't understand what "leadership retreat" meant.

He brought a petition signed by other neighbors to the city council and asked them to send the issue back to planning and zoning.

Debbie LaCriox, owner of the property, said the center is meant to be a peaceful place for wellness, growth, and connection. Something that Sioux City is missing.

LaCroix accepted Fitch’s suggestion to have an open house to give neighbors a chance to ask questions and work together to ensure LaCroix is a good neighbor.

Mayor Bob Scott motioned to remand it back, but the motion failed.
