While the tourism industry has been impacted nationally by tariffs and other economic impacts, South Dakota tourism remains strong.

According to Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen, South Dakota’s tourism industry is showing promising results and is performing better than last year.

Hagan told South Dakota Public Broadcasting that despite being flat overall, South Dakota’s state park visits have seen a 2% increase year-to-date in August. National Parks in South Dakota have seen a 5.8% rise in visitors.

Hagen expects the number of visitors to continue to increase, as the previous year had a record number of visitors.

Hagen said that South Dakota’s tourism promotion tax has seen a 4% increase. In January South Dakota Tourism will release their annual report on the industry’s yearly sales tax revenue.
