Celebrando Siouxland is a week-long annual festival hosted by Unity in Action. The festival celebrates the cultural diversity of the Siouxland region, with a focus on honoring and uplifting the Latino community.

The festival features a wide variety of events, including a parade, a movie showing of Selena, folklore dancing, and much more. This year’s theme is Como La Flor; Unity in Action will bring a Selena tribute performer to sing some of the singer’s songs.

Our guest, Olga Guevara, the executive director of Unity in Action, shared her thoughts on the festival’s deeper meaning. Despite the fear and uncertainty within the community, Guevara emphasized the importance for people to come together and connect.

Guevara also highlighted the significance of standing together and embracing all cultures, especially in challenging times. She acknowledged how fear has changed behaviors, causing some community members to withdraw, which raised concerns about possible declines in festival attendance.

Yet her hope remains strong. Guevara believes Celebrando Siouxland has strengthened bonds in the past and brought joy to participants, something she could see on their faces.

The week-long celebration started earlier this week with this year’s theme being Como La Flor. Events for this weekend include a parade and movie screening on Friday, Zumba class on Saturday, and a festival on Sunday.
